3 Tips For Your Next Family Session

Getting ready for your family photo session can feel overwhelming—what to wear, where to go, how to make sure everyone is in a good mood... sound familiar?

As a family photographer (and a mom!), I completely understand how much work goes into getting everyone camera-ready. That’s why I’ve narrowed it down to three key tips that will help you prepare and walk into your session feeling calm, confident, and ready to enjoy the moment.

1. Start with Mom’s Outfit First

Let’s be honest—most of the time, moms are the ones planning everyone’s outfits for family photos. And what happens more often than not? She picks hers last.

Here’s the problem with that: finding something you feel confident and comfortable in is hard enough already! That’s why I always recommend that moms choose their outfit first, and then coordinate the rest of the family’s outfits around it.

Pick something that makes you feel beautiful, fits well, and photographs nicely (neutral tones and soft textures work beautifully). Once you’ve nailed your outfit, everything else will fall into place much more easily.

2. Plan Your Route Ahead of Time

This one might sound simple, but it’s so important: know exactly where you’re going before the day of the session. I always suggest plugging the address into your GPS the day before and even double-checking travel time, especially if your session is during rush hour or golden hour (that dreamy light goes fast!).

Arriving 5–10 minutes early gives your family time to settle in, breathe, and relax before we start. Running late can add stress to an otherwise fun experience—and we don’t want to be racing the sunset!

Pro Tip: Tell your partner and kids the session starts 15–30 minutes earlier than it actually does... it works wonders 😉

3. Make It a Special Family Event

Want to get genuine smiles and happy vibes during your session? Make it an experience to look forward to!

When your session feels like part of a fun day—not just a task on your to-do list—everyone is more relaxed and excited (especially the kids). Plan something special before or after the shoot: grab ice cream, go bowling, or head out to dinner together.

When kids associate family photos with fun memories, it makes future sessions so much easier—and more enjoyable for everyone.
